We were called in by the FM contractor to help resolve a significant loading issue on the infrastructure of this industrial estate. As part of a major building upgrade new building services are to be installed into the main buildings. In order to distribute the services across an access road there is an existing pipe bridge which over the years has had new steel pipes, generally full of hot water, added on in an ad hoc fashion.

 

We undertook survey work on this bridge to fully understand its construction and its condition; being exposed on the south coast had left several of the members with some significant rust problems. We concluded, after a back analysis of the frame, that strengthening of the existing with a relieving truss would be the most appropriate solution.
